BSA Silver Beaver Award

Dr. Randall Ogata, owner of University Orthodontics in Mercer Island, Washington, received the Silver Beaver Award from the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The Silver Beaver is the highest award a troop can present to an adult leader. Ogata is Cubmaster of Pack 624 and onboarding chair for Troop 457. At the award ceremony he was lauded for creating a roundtable to bring scouting troop leaders from the area together to share ideas and resources, which has kept recruitment and retention high. He also started the Cascade District Tiger Safari at Camp Edward, which introduces new Cub Scouts to outdoor adventures. Ogata received his education at the University of Washington, University of Nebraska and University of Oklahoma. He is an ethics lecturer at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and is involved with his church and various other community organizations.

American Association of Orthodontists Humanitarian Award

The American Association of Orthodontists recently bestowed its Humanitarian Award on Dr. E. David Engst, a retired orthodontist from Bellingham, Washington. The award recognizes people who have made contributions to improving the quality of human life that extend beyond the usual scope of private practice, academic functions or organized dentistry. After practicing in Bellingham for 26 years, Engst retired and began volunteering extensively. For the past eight years he’s spent at least six months of the year providing free dental services in Latin American countries, Cambodia and the Philippines. Engst is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Alaska Journal of Commerce’s Top Forty Under 40

Dr. Justin Libby was named to the Alaska Journal of Commerce’s Top Forty Under 40 list. Libby is the owner of The Libby Group, which has offices in Anchorage and Dillingham. Libby is past president of the Anchorage Dental Society and an active member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry and American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. His areas of special interest include preventative oral health education, minimally-invasive biomimetic dentistry, 3D guided dental implant surgery, and digitally planned and guided full mouth rehabilitations. He graduated with honors from the Loma Linda School of Dentistry. Libby and his father, Dr. Jim Libby, were featured in the premiere issue of The Northwest Dentist for their work in rural Alaska.

Dr. Gurpreet S. Khurana

The dental lifestyle magazine Incisal Edge has selected Dr. Gurpreet S. Khurana of Bellevue, Washington as one of its annual 40 Under 40 recipients. He is the only dentist in the Northwest to receive the award. Khurana is involved with multiple practices including Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry, Pure Braces of Bellevue and Alpine Dental and Wellness in Monroe. He is the author of “Student Doctor Network Dental School Admissions Guide” (SDN Academic Press), a step-by-step guide to applying and getting accepted to dental school. Khurana earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington and attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
